‘Drop Everything and Read’ (DEAR) is an established part of our curriculum at St Mary’s.

We really promote reading for pleasure because it has been proven that those who do perform significantly better at school than other learners. Not only does reading regularly help to improve vocabulary development, it also has a significant impact on Writing and spelling. Through Drop Everything and Read children are able to build up reading stamina and record this progress of how long they have read for onto their own or class reading stamina chart.

DEAR takes place twice a week on a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. When the bell rings every adult and child drops what they are doing and picks up a book and reads. Children can bring a book in from home or enjoy one of our books from our set of DEAR books that each classroom has. This will last between 10-15 minutes and all you will hear is the turning of pages throughout the school while everyone enjoys their book, including our teachers!

We have also invited our parents in to share this event with their child and have received positive feedback from parents who thoroughly enjoy sharing this precious reading time with their children.

Knowledge of the World curriculum driver: children have access to a range of texts whilst developing a love of reading for pleasure.
